Numerous studies have been conducted on the safety and efficacy of electronic cigarettes. While there are a few reported side effects such as mouth and throat irritation, nausea and headache, the benefits far out weight the potentially fatal side effects of smoking traditional cigarettes. Of course, everyone knows that smoking traditional cigarettes is detrimental to our health, as well as the health of those around us due to the effects of second hand smoking. However, sometimes people need to hear the shocking statistics to really understand how serious the side effects are and how likely they are to be affected. While many people know of the damaging health effects cigarettes can have on the smoker, they don’t often think about the effect it has on their loved ones and others around them. Smoking can ruin relationships or hinder them from growing; cause damaging health effects from second hand smoke and cause a number of fatalities indirectly. For example, according to PBS Kids, approximately 1500 kids are killed each year by fires in the home that were caused by cigarettes. Smoking traditional cigarettes is also bad for the environment. Cigarette butts are among the biggest causes of pollution on beaches according to PBS Kids. Facts Published by PBS Kids in Regard To Secondhand Smoke Include: Kills about 3,000 non-smokers each year from lung cancer. Causes nearly 300,000 lung infections (like pneumonia and bronchitis) Can cause leukemia in cats and enlarged hearts in dogs. Causes 30 times as many lung cancer deaths than other kinds of pollution The latest statistics from the Center for Disease Control show that smoking is still the number one cause of death in the United States and nearly 1 in every 5 Americans is a smoker. While this ratio has decreased in the past few decades it is still a scary statistic because the CDC also reports that there were 443,000 deaths attributable to cigarette smoking between the years of 2000-2004, just four years. This works out to about 37,000 deaths per year or 300 deaths per month; and this is only in the United States. The top three causes of death attributable to cigarette smoking are lung cancer, ischemic heart disease and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), respectively. According to the American Lung Association smoke from traditional cigarettes contains over 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer. The ALA also stated that smoking causes harm to just about every organ in the body. Smoking is not only the leading cause of lung cancer and COPD, but is also one of the leading causes of coronary heart disease and stroke. Electronic cigarettes that use e liquid do not contain these harmful chemicals, and in fact many studies have shown that the amount of nicotine emitted is far lower than that of traditional cigarettes. Because nicotine is the ingredient in cigarettes that causes addiction, electronic cigarettes are increasingly being used as smoking cessation aids. Despite positive research findings, the FDA still refuses to support the use of e cigs in this way. Switching to e cigarettes from traditional cigarettes has helped many smokers reduce the amount and frequency of their smoking habits, with no adverse effects. Companies like Clean Smoke USA strive to provide the top quality e cigarette products that have been proven safe and effective. Aside from the damage traditional cigarettes can inflict upon the body, they can also be pretty damaging to the wallet as well. As the cost of cigarettes continues to rise, it is no surprise many people are turning to e cigs. Consider the following: Let’s say a pack of cigarettes costs $5.50 (it is much higher in some states, but this is the average) and a smoker smokes a pack a day. This means about $165 per month is spent on cigarettes or close to $800 a year. Imagine if this amount was invested instead. Electronic cigarettes are not only less costly, but they are cleaner and safer than traditional cigarettes and can also help you significantly reduce your smoking habit overall.
