Nyanya: As Death Toll Rises, Military Raids Suburb, Arrests 8 Victor Okeke, winifred ogbebo — May 4, 2014 The death toll from Thursday’s Nyanya bomb blast has continued to rise from the initially announced figure of 12 to 20. The minister of health, Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu, who made the announcement when he led health correspondents on a visit to the hospitals where the bomb blast victims are currently receiving treatment,yesterday in Abuja, added that the number of injured victims also climbed to 73, up from 71. Chukwu was also accompanied on the visit by the minister of state for health, Dr Khaliru Alhassan. Authorities of the district hospitals in Gwarimpa, Asokoro, Maitama and National Hospital said the injured in their care were all stable and responding to treatment. Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters yesterday announced that some suspected terrorists have been arrested by members of the armed forces during a raid on Nyanya. According to a statement issued by the director of defence information, Major General Chris Olukolade, eight persons are currently being interrogated after raid operations by troops of security agencies on joint surveillance and patrol mission in the Federal Capital today. The arrested persons are helping ongoing investigation with useful information after the operation which is sequel to intelligence reports. Most of those arrested are foreigners who were picked up around Kugbo and areas adjoining the Nyanya, site of the recent bombings. Those confirmed to constitute a threat to security will be handed over to appropriate prosecutorial agency on conclusion of the preliminary investigations, he said. In the meantime, Operation Restore Peace currently being conducted in the north-central states has maintained its operational tempo in the efforts to stamp out the activities of armed gangs in the region.... source: leadership
