OBS Summer School 2014: Re-thinking pharmaceutical policy This year’s Observatory Summer School will tackle the topical issue of re-thinking pharmaceutical policy: optimising decisions in an era of uncertainty. Join us in San Servolo, Venice from 6-12 July 2014. Building on participants’ own knowledge and expertise, the School will: - Provide a state of the art account of novel strategies to optimise pharmaceutical policy decisions - Draw on a wide body of evidence to provide a range of concrete pharmaceutical policy options, for example risk sharing agreements, sustainable long-term funding, personalised care, assessment of new technologies, and joint procurement - Interpret how such policy options can be operationalised considering resource, infrastructure and technology constraints in different settings - Draw practical policy and implementation lessons to deliver better decisions that will have a positive impact on population health given resource constraints The School will guide participants to: - Critically appraise methods to inform pricing decisions, focussing on implications for efficiency, access and cost - Understand procurement strategies and policy options - Discuss the role of health technology assessment and value based pricing tools in improving efficiency in resource allocation - Explore the role of risk sharing agreements, understanding the evidence from the European context including a taxonomy and case studies - Investigate the rational use of medicines, covering cost-containment, prescribing quality, the role of generics, and appropriate use of medicines - Hypothesise what pharmaceutical policy will look like in the future The Summer School is organized by the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies, the Veneto Region of Italy, the European Commission and the World Health Organization.
