OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, FOR THE PEOPLE Nearly 141 years ago, after the Battle of Gettysburg, following the dedication ceremony of a cemetery where many who died during that battle were buried, President Abraham Lincoln delivered a short, two-minute speech, containing some of the most powerful and succinct words used to describe our form of government, by ending with the declaration ...that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. The phrase of the people, by the people, for the people has great heartfelt meaning to me, for my reasons for running for political office, and for the manner in which I shall conduct myself once elected: OF THE PEOPLE: Our elected officials are our peers. We are all created equal. Though our likes, dislikes, and actions may differ, I consider myself to be no better than any other person, nor do I feel that any other person is better than me. BY THE PEOPLE: We choose our own elected officials. They should not be thrust upon us by others. I seek your trust, faith, and support in electing me to the position, and would never take lightly the responsibilities entrusted to me by virtue of having been duly elected by you. FOR THE PEOPLE: Our elected officials are representatives and proponents of the common good. Once elected, I will dedicate myself to the service of all who avail themselves of the District Court. I will never forget that the authority and power vested in my office originate from the people who elect me, and will maintain an humble air for so long as the people permit me to hold the office.
