OFFICE OF DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT For Immediate Release Press Release # 1 Issued on: Wednesday July 10, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. “Tropical Storm Watch “ The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) has been advised by The Meteorological Service that a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Jamaica as Tropical Storm Chantal moves westward and could pass close to the island’s eastern coastline. The ODPEM is advising that the storm could possibly impact the eastern sections of the island if it shifts from track. Jamaica could begin feeling effects of Tropical Storm Chantal as early as tonight as the system passes in the vicinity of the island either as a tropical wave of tropical cyclone. The main threat at this time is for outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms to develop over the island, starting with eastern parishes, during the course of the night and into Thursday. Periods of strong, gusty winds are also possible in thunderstorms. The public is advised to continue monitoring the radio for further advisories and to avoid areas that are at risk from flooding and landslides. Also take the following precautions in the event of heavy rains and flooding: 1. Be ready to evacuate if you live in low-lying or flood-prone areas. Decide on likely evacuation routes now. 2. Avoid flooded waterways, i.e. Fording, gullies, streams or rivers, either on foot or in vehicles. Marine operators, primarily north and east of the Island should remain on alert to unfavorable sea conditions through Thursday. The ODPEM will continue to monitor the situation and further updates will be provided as the situation demands.
