OGUN STATE STUDENTS ON MY MIND! “…Another question we need to ask ourselves is why OGUN state, despite so many TERTIARY institutions, is not the most prosperous state in NIGERIA? The problems of our EDUCATION system have been repeated so often that we all know them ‘of-hand’, and see them on daily basis. What is hardly ever discussed publicly especially with students who are the primary stakeholders, are practical solution. I will therefore share with you today, a few of the proposals I have adopted and am presently developing: (1) RETURNING RESPECT FOR EDUCATION: Illiterate or anti-intellectual leadership with questionable academic credentials in the country should not be allowed in the country, and should be actively discourage. Leaders models for young minds. (2) BROADENING THE ECONOMY: Nothing motivates students more than the prospect of doing well in life and any profession that HE or SHE chooses. The narrower the economy, the narrower their options. (3) OWNERSHIP DEREGULATION: Opening up education ownership once again, including giving back those schools that were previously taken over. This may require a transitional period of joint public-private ownership. (4) PUNISHMENTS: Enactment of specific legislation to severely punish all examination malpractices aided by students, staff and invigilators (5) ADEQUATE FUNDING: A national commitment to a minimum of 26% SUBSTANTIVE budgeting for the education sector (for, faculties facilities, books, curriculum revision, etc. (6) AUTONOMY FOR UNIVERSITIES: University are key in any state or National Education policy, as they feed-high level economy personnel as well as feed the teacher-base of the lower levels. This does notnmean INDEPENDENCE, but a great amount of freedom in determining its present and future in terms of personnel and curriculum. (7) ACOUNTABLE GOVERNANCE: Without transparent, accountable and enlightened political leadership, the environment for change simply does not exist...
