OGUN TEACHERS SUSPEND STRIKE Teachers in Ogun State have suspended the 3 week old strike embarked upon to press home their demand for the payment of a 27.5% peculiar allowance. This followed the signing of an agreement today between executive of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) led by its State Chairman,Comrade Dare Ilekoya and the State Government side headed by the Head of Service, Mrs. Modupe Adekunle. The government after considering the plea by representativesof the NUT agreed to pay 15% of the basic salaries of teachers as peculiar allowance with effect from the beginning of next month with an assurance that all other demands would be attended to in due course. The agreement also added that no teacher would be victimized for whatever role played while the strike lasted. Speaking after signing the agreement, the Chairman NUT, Comrade Ilekoya appreciated Governor Ibikunle Amosun for considering the 1st of July effective date and the promise for further negotiation as the finance of the State improves. He promised teachers’ continued support towards improving the education sector,calling on all teachers in both primary and secondary schools in the State to resume work immediately. “We have seen that truly the finances of the State for now cannot go beyond the payment of 15%, we have to be considerate and then suspend the strike for peace to reign in the education sector, and on that note we want to implore our teachers in both primary and secondary schools to resume work immediately” Ilekoya directed. Also in her reaction, the Head of Service, Mrs. Adekunle lauded union leaders for their understanding and cooperation in resolving the issues, affirming that the outstanding promotion among other issues raised were already being attended to.
