OHIO - The Medina County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty filed two counts of companion animal cruelty for the death of a K-9 officer against Sgt. Brett Harrison. The dog named Beny was left in the police car by Sgt. Harrison on September 28 for over four hours in the parking lot of the police department. Beny died from heatstroke reported fox8. Authorities reported the temperature at the time Beny was discovered was nearing 80 degrees. The windows of the patrol car were closed and the engine was turned off. Harrison received a two-week unpaid suspension and lost 40 hours of vacation time. Just this week, a new system has been installed in all cruisers who transport K-9 officers, and is designed to monitor the cars for temperatures exceeding predetermined limits. If the temperatures rise to an unacceptable level, the windows will go down, a fan will initiate and a pager system will alert the officer of the emergency situation. Earlier this week, Sgt. Harrison issued a public apology to everyone about the tragedy, specifically addressing the loss of Beny. In one part of the officers statement he apologized to Beny: Most of all, I want to say I’m sorry to my partner, friend and loving family member Beny. I wish everyday that I could go back and change that day or that I could put myself in your place. You will always be in my heart, and I will miss you every second of every day. The two cruelty charges are second degree misdemeanors. https://facebook/NationalPetRescueExaminer/photos/a.519065031513444.1073741825.332647520155197/726404707446141/?type=1&fref=nf
