OK, I am going to say something and I hope you read this carefully before a comment because my point is very benign. This whole incident that is going on in Ferguson, MO. I mention it because I keep getting flashbacks of the Rodney King riots. The saddest part of all of this is wondering, have we not evolved at all? I was on my way home when the riot broke out in Los Angeles. I could see the fire in my rear view mirror. We were on curfew for 5 days and I could not go to work. When I was finally able to go back, I cried. I wish I could describe to you what I saw. STEEL GIRDERS had melted (yes, meted) and the streets were strewn with people whose homes burned down, pushing grocery carts, some were weeping on the curb. Others were still angry and yelling and throwing things. Small fires were still smoldering. It was not a good day. On my way home, I had to take a detour because of the damage done and wound up having to drive through a very rough part of LA. Stopping at lights was uncomfortable as I could feel the stares from others. So much hate and so much violence. It was one of the saddest days of my life. I am speaking to HUMANITY as I mention this as sometimes there is no justice and that IS a crime, but HATE is not an answer. You know, Eldridge Cleaver had a good philosophy...IF YOURE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, YOURE PART OF THE PROBLEM. Violence begets violence. I know that sometimes releasing rage feels good and justified, but how does it help? I dont claim to have the answer, I only believe that violence never is. Be part of the solution...do something pro-active that actually brings about change. I apologize if this sounds Polly-Anna-ish, but I will never forget driving down Western Blvd. I had hoped that would never happen again.
