OK. I get asked this question; is that your real name? and it can get to be a problem so I am happy to answer that question in full here, and tell the story of how it came to be my real name. In 1986 I had my name legally changed to my stage name. I just didnt have the snap to keep up with more than one name, and had fronted a band for several years in Dallas called Deb E. Dee and the Daddycats. I had asked the judge to grant me a name change to my drivers license number. It was a way to keep my name private, and special, because I had developed a consciousness that to know someones real name should be a special privilege, not able to be demanded by just any person who accosted you and asked to see your license. I fully expected to continue to be called Debbie D or some version of that name by family and friends. The judge said to me standing there with the blue hair I cant do that - it will embarrass your children. If you want that done you will have to go to the judge down the hall (she then made a face to indicate her dislike of the judge down the hall).So I just said, well, how about this one and grabbed the stage name which the judge found acceptable. The whole thing was funny. Ultimately I wound up being called the same name I had been called since birth, as a nickname. Ancestry says this about the name Dee, which I found kind of interesting. Dee Name Meaning Welsh: nickname for a swarthy person, from Welsh du ‘dark’, ‘black’.Irish: variant of Daw 3.English and Scottish: habitational name from a settlement on the banks of the river Dee in Cheshire or either of the rivers so named in Scotland. The origin of both of these is a Celtic word meaning ‘sacred’, ‘goddess’. Heres a song from the Austin version of the band, Deb E. Dee and the Daddycats, featuring Leo King on lead guitar, Larry Allen on Bass, and Noah Ramirez and Steve Hatch on drums from the 1986 cassette album called 909 soon to be re-released on CD.
