OK, I wasnt going to share this.. but I decided for the people who will actually take the time to listen, that it may be worth your while more than you really realize at this moment.. I know that is has changed my decision making process while out on the water this summer!! So Ill start off by saying that there really has not been much of a Top-water bite at all here in Kansas this year.... well at least in the greater Wichita area. Dont get me wrong I have caught several solid fish on frogs this summer, but their was next to NO Buzzbait bite this year.. when last year I caught several giant bass over 5-7lbs even as early as late March early April. Even the frog bites have been very few and far between and only come for those avid frog fisherman that really know how to pause the frog for extended periods of time. The little bite their was ended very quickly and was not nearly as vicious or as long lasting as the past couple of years. However I quickly realized this and started searching for the big bass that like to come up and gorge early in the summer mornings. I found that with the lack of spring rain the bass just did not want to come up to the surface to feed.. or even near the shoreline, which I believe was due to the low water and low oxygen levels near the surface. So I started going all my diff types of plastics trying to cover the different water columns... I started catching A-lot of bass on a weightless rigged Senko style worm made by skirmishbaits called the bazooka worm, I quickly realized that the bass were slightly lower in the water column then usual for this time of year and were roaming and eating a-lot of worms and crayfish instead of theyre normal shad Diet at this time of year. Then around the beginning of July the Bazooka worm bite suddenly DIED!! Once again I started searching for the big bass. One day I was fishing the Bazooka worm and had about a 1/2lb. bluegill hooked up and was reeling him in... when I got about 3 feet off shore and had to drag the gill over some weeds to get him in.. a Giant Bass came from within the weeds and Absolutely crushed the gill eating it right off off my hook and leaving me with only the lips left attached to my worm. I found out rather quickly by throwing a Chatterbait... Swimjig and Squarebill crankbait that they were now feeding on Bite Sized Bluegill!! This really continues to be the pattern lately for BIG BASS. Just the other day I was throwing an M9 squarebill crankbait... by Skirmish Baits and I made a very long cast at a brush towards the shoreline... I jerked my bait to get it moving and snagged a good size gill, as I reeled it in I was about 3 feet away from me when the gill decided to tail-walk and then submerge about a foot under water in spinning fashion.... Just then I saw the biggest bass I have seen all year come out of the rocks below and absolutely Hammer the gill right off of my crankbait... I tryed to give her some slack hoping to hook her with the gill... but she just took off with the bluegill and waved at me with her massive Tail!!! Anyway.... this has just taught me to never take anything for granted... Everything can change from year to year dramatically... dont ever close your mind to experimenting with things you might not normally do at a certain time of year or body of water.
