OK, everything trending in my newsfeed in one, not-so-succinct, but hopefully calming response: 1. Ebola isnt as contagious as the media would have you believe. Its deadly in developing countries because they simply dont have the infrastructure required to treat patients. (Example: Imagine what it was like to have the flu in the early 20th century, and how ridiculous it seems now that the flu was responsible for more deaths in 1918 than the first world war. Thats what its like having Ebola in West Africa. Its like the flu in 1918. Its not the same here.) Ebola wouldnt be nearly as catastrophic were there to be an outbreak in North America, which there wont. Calm down. 2. The guy who was diagnosed in Texas with ebola will be just fine in no time. Symptoms of the disease dont appear for 21 days, so he didnt know he had it when he came back to America. If youre upset about this, you should probably direct your concerns to the Travel and Tourism Advisory Boards who are still allowing travel to the area. Dude has ebola. Thats punishment enough. Leave him be. Calm down. 3. ISIS is as representative of Islam as the Westboro Baptist Church is of Christianity. Yes, theyre horrible, terrifying people. No, there arent nearly as many of them as the media would have you believe. The crimes against humanity that they commit are no different than what the despots and dictators in the area have been doing for decades, theyre just a lot more public about it. Its horrendous, and hopefully theyll be stopped before any more atrocities are carried out. They are, however, not representative of the loving faith that is Islam, just like Pat Buchanan is not representative of Christianity. Also, as a catholic, I can safely say that my faith is responsible for far more deaths in the history of mankind than theirs, and fear-mongering and Islamophobia arent going to help anything. Calm down. Seriously, calm down! Trust me, Im an accordion player.
