OK folks, the friendly teddy bear Coach Dustin is going to step - TopicsExpress

OK folks, the friendly teddy bear Coach Dustin is going to step aside for a moment for a PSA brought to you by an irritated not so friendly Coach Dustin. I saw something today, in all the of the classes that I coached, that very much got under my skin. Todays WOD was a long one. For most it went to within 5 or 10 minutes of the end of the class. For some, it went right up to the last minute or even a few minutes beyond the start of the next class. Despite the fact that these athletes were pouring themselves into these WODs right up to the very last, some members in the on coming classes thought it was OK to start walking around the main floor. They began setting up equipment around the still working athletes and carrying on conversations as if the floor space was theirs already. I even saw 2 members conversing with each other to either side of somebody who still had a few exercises left in a butt kicker of a WOD. This is unacceptable. If you arrive to class early and there are still other members on the floor getting after it, there are only 2 things you should be doing in their immediate vicinity. Firstly, we should all be cheering them on, helping to push them through those last awful minutes, even if its somebody you dont know or havent met yet. Secondly, you could be asking one of their neighbors if you can take over their equipment to save the trouble of putting it away, and then turning to cheer them on. If you want to start warming up or going through a few practice reps thats fine, but do so off to the side and out of the way. Dont start invading somebodys WOD space while theyre in the midst of wrecking themselves to get better. Have some respect for our fellow athletes. We all have our individual reasons for participating in this sport, but above all else we are a community. We push each other, we sweat together, we tear hands together, we party together, we all try to make those around us better while they do the same for us. We thrive together, and we improve together. As a fitness specific community, the most important thing we can do for each other is respect those in the middle of a WOD, giving it their all. We expect the same from them while were in the thick of it. So next time you get there a little early and see somebody struggling through the last stages of a WOD the is probably about to knock you on your ass as well, dont just start setting your own stuff up. Take the few minutes to push them to move faster, to get those last few reps or skip that one last rest to just power through. They deserve all of our respect, just as we deserve theirs. A slightly ruffled but stepping down from the soap box, Coach Dustin
