OK, here is my take on the new movie Noah. And yes, I have seen it. 1. Why did the director make this movie? This is an important question, because it sets up why we want to see it. Possible answers: a. Hollywood is truly interested in producing a movie that depicts an actual scriptural account of the story of Noah. b. Hollywood has figured out that good, Christian films are well attended, so they begin to make high action, impact films with a Christian Theme loosely based on a biblical character in hopes that Christians will come. c. They have an agenda and so disguise their agenda in psedo-religious jargon in hopes to pass it off as something religious. So depending on how you answer the first question, will depend on how you will view my point of view. I will share my opinion without giving away important details about the film. Is it my intent to create controversy so as to stir interest, not at all. Im just stating my opinion, so that you might be better informed. Action packed: Yes, very much so. If you happen to see this in IMAX, bring ear plugs. The visual effects are nothing short of what Hollywood can produce. Since this is an amoral part of the dialogue, I would agree that the producers achieved their desired effects. Admission to be based on biblical account, while taking some theatrical license in retelling the story: This is an understatement. (This movie is a cross between Noah and any of the Transformer movies. If you see this movie, youll understand what I mean) Did they give the viewer pause to think: Yes, very much so Audience: This is NOT a movie for children. It has a VERY dark side to it. Do I have a problem with it or would I recommend it: Id like to think that Hollywood is interested in making films that appeal to a whole other faith based audience. But what I am afraid of is that one is being wooed in a false sense of something that has the label of being religious. My main points of disappointment and non recommendation are these, because it gives a false reality to the story for those who may not know the story, or will think this is how it really was. This is a slippery slope. Here are my warning flags: 1. The movie begins with this opening line: In the beginning, there was nothing. And then it proceeds from there. Unfortunately, while trying to make a theatrical point, it greatly misses the central theme of the intent of Scripture. Genesis 1:1 begins, In the beginning, GOD.... This movie is built around mans idea, and leaving out the very premise of God is unfortunate. 2. Many movie reviewers have already stated the obvious mistake of saying the reason for the flood was because man has screwed things up,, especially nature. In reality, God was dealing with the issue of sin. Todays culture minimizes the reality of sin and its consequences. 3. While I understand their take on mankind trying to take control of the ARK and Noah not wanting them to enter, I believe this is exactly opposite. The Ark was their salvation. God wanted any that would come to be saved, and man rejected that until it was too late. While he extends his grace to all, there will come a time of judgement, and when God shut the door it was too late. Im not one to sit and watch a movie and try to figure all the subtle messages and themes, but these seem pretty obvious. Would I recommend it, that will be up to you. Would I see it again or take someone to see it. No. I think there are better films currently playing that present the message of love, grace and Gods mercy. Do I think that NOAH will try to cash in on the controversy, and try to lure many to see it with mixed messages. Yes. Id like to hear your thoughts. Please keep them civil. I think in a day and age where there are so many mixed messages, I think this adds to the confusion, rather than answer the questions. Im sure there will be others that can offer a better and more philosophical response. I think wed be better served by sharing about Gods love and mercy and grace in tangible ways especially as we approach Easter.
