OK, time for a little rant. I was visited this am by one of my former young clients who was upset about the recent suicide of a friend. I did not know this boy personally, but I have heard this story way too many times. We dont know what happened or why he would do this. He seemed so happy. Well let me explain why this happens. Its not that complicated. He was raised in a society, a culture that does not allow for or promote the open and authentic expression of thought and feelings. So he had to hide them, deny them. He had to be what they thought he should be. He had to think, feel and behave in a way that was acceptable to his tribe, in order to experience the need to belong. And this need to belong is so strong and deeply human that many people live entire lives in this disingenuous condition. For some however this false or fake life feels like a prison. It feels more like isolation than belonging. Isolation, perceived or otherwise kills the human spirit. Some kids just cant be fake.
