OK, who out there experienced the thrill of war games with hostile forces? In my time (80s) that would have been with the Soviet Union. I am guessing that the modern sailors have not experienced this since China, North Korea and the would be hostile Arab nations (Syria etc.) do not have comparable Naval might. If anyone knows otherwise please correct me. Back in the 80s it was normal to have war games of a semi hostile nature with the Soviets. The typical game was for us (meaning our cruisers and our fast attack submarines) to try to find their submarines and chase them down. I remember one day when my ship (Truxtun CGN-35) operated with propulsion on a single shaft. The other was locked. This made us appear to be a commercial shipping vessel to the sonar systems on the Russian subs. One day such a submarine decided to travel beneath our ship. The goal was to hide in our noise and to evade detection by US Submarines. We let them think we were a freighter for a few hours and then we let loose with a LOUD PING from our sonar dome. This was a wakeup call to the submarine beneath us that we were in fact a war ship. It sped off. Then we unlocked our other shaft and chased that submarine down with a flank bell. This went on for several hours as the sub realized it had no place to hide. It was quite an exciting evening. Needless to say none of us got much sleep, especially with the pings at all hours of the night. Anybody have similar tales? Such games have the potential to lead to accidents. I know this sounds like conspiracy theory, but it would not surprise me if such games might have played a role in the Kursk, Thresher and Scorpion submarines lost at sea. Call me crazy, but I put little faith in the official stories told to the public.
