OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS AND ANTI-AGING Posted on Jun 6, 2013 In ARIIX ARIIX News Multiple epidemiologic studies have demonstrated better survival rates among individuals with established cardiovascular disease who have a higher intake of marine omega-3 fatty acids. Based on this, the American Heart Association recommends increasing our cold-water fish consumption and the use of omega-3 fatty acid supplements for the primary and secondary prevention of coronary artery disease. Mechanisms that are related to this protective effect have been noted in various studies and include the anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet, anti-hypertensive, anti-arrhythmic, and triglyceride lowering effects of omega-3 fish oils. This has sparked an ongoing interest in identifying any additional mechanisms or cardiovascular benefits relating to omega-3 fatty acids. An issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association from January 2010 reported on a clinical trial that documented the benefits for those individuals who consume higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which involved looking at telomeres, the cap at the end of chromosomes that protect the DNA. As we age, the protective telomere caps slowly shorten which can lead to the death of cells and has been linked to cardiovascular mortality. This study looked at over 600 patients with stable coronary artery disease and followed them for over six years. Researchers discovered that the rate and amount of telomere shortening was measurably decreased in those individuals who had the highest levels of marine omega-3 fatty acids. Their conclusions point to the possibility that omega-3 fatty acids can help protect against cellular aging in patients with coronary heart disease and lengthen their lives. Telomere shortening has also been related to oxidative stress and free radical damage. Increasing marine fish oil intake along with a wide array of antioxidants and supporting nutrients can help slow the shortening process and have an anti-aging effect on cells. Having a healthy diet, balanced nutritional supplements and high-quality omega-3 fish oils is a great choice for health and keeping your body functioning and looking more youthful.
