ON BLAMING OBAMA FOR IRAQ I have listened all day to conservative pundits blaming President Obama for the collapse in Iraq. Obviously, the president cannot be held responsible for actions that took place before his administration even began, but he is culpable for one thing. As I said at the time, by not insisting on war crimes trials for the Bush administration, and by taking up the false narrative of the Bush administration that the war had been about bringing democracy to the region, President Obama ensured that whatever truths he said later would be swallowed by the quagmire of lies the war was built upon. So, in a scene straight out of George Orwell, many are claiming that Bushs war based on lies would have been winnable had Obama just thrown more bodies into the fire. When he was elected, President Obama refused to hold war crimes trials for the Bush administration saying that we needed to leave the past and move on, but unless we confront them, the lies of the past become the policies of the future.
