ON EXAMINATION: One down and one more to go. Im in the midst of my last M.Th examinations, and thankful that through out all the exams Ive had given theres not a single exam I missed out due to sickness. Thank you God for such kindness. IN REFLECTING ON EXAMS, I started to seriously question the EFFICACY OF EXAMS AS A TEST OF ONESS QUALITY AND EXTENT OF LEARNING. Sadly, it remains the main criteria through which we are evaluated. I think this isnt fair enough. On another level, I question the system which makes us see our fellow students as ones that have to be surpassed. WHY CAN WE JUST BE SUCCESSFUL TOGETHER? Why cant we share as we write exams? Why is it called cheating when we share as we go along our educational journey? Why is success often understood in terms of individual achievements (at the expense of others)? NO WONDER, WE NEVER LEARN TO SHARE OTHER RESOURCES AS WELLl... I think I smell a little bit of patriarchal notion of masculinity at work here (probably among other forces). We are so much used to mutiliating each other, competing with each other in different areas of life that we forget the path of sharing and becoming successful TOGETHER. We always see others as rivals, not as fellow human beings in lifes journey. We are learnt really well how to take, but never to give sufficiently... After all what is success? How are we to define winning in a context where winners take all and the losers reel in humiliation, poverty and oppression? We are made to believe that its a world where the strongest and most able ones survive and win... (This calls for a critical reflection on the well-known notion survival of the fittest which, I hope, will soon follow :) )
