ON JANUARY 25, 1995 (Sorry we missed this one!) ... New York congressman Jose Serrano, speaking from the floor of the House of Representatives, praised radio personality Howard Stern for talking a suicidal caller down from the George Washington Bridge in December. Then on January 26, proving that her 1993 campaign promise was no joke, New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman announced that she would name an Interstate 295 rest area after Stern. Eight years later, however, it was closed by Governor Jim McGreevey in order to save the Garden State a reported $1 million a year. Its worth noting that, according to the New York Times, two lanes were temporarily shut down on the George Washington Bridge during the Stern callers suicide attempt. So, in case you were wondering where current New Jersey governor Chris Christie got THAT idea ...
