ON THE FOUR GOSPELS OF JESUS CHRIST 關於四本福音書 by Philip Yang The Bible collected four gospels of Jesus Christ. Two were written by Jesus’ disciples. Matthew and John are among the twelve disciples of Jesus. Therefore the two Gospels according to them are more or less with the same sequence, mostly chronological. The first gospel is according to Matthew. Matthew was a tax collector (today’s accountant and IRS officer). His version started with Jesus’ genealogy. The training as accountant probably contributed his detail recording of Jesus’ teachings, parables, and the descriptions of the blue print of Church (the Kingdom of Heaven). It is the longest among the four. The second gospel is according to Mark. Mark was not among the twelve. The Gospel according to Mark presumably is taken from information related to him by Peter, or summarized from the Gospel of Matthew. It is precise and up to the point. It’s also the shortest among the four. The third gospel was according to Luke. Luke was a travel companion of Paul. In other words, he was in Paul’s apostolic team. Luke was a medical doctor. He did extensive research before he wrote the gospel and the fifth historic book in New Testament, Acts of Apostles. He used medical terms in his writing. He is particularly sensitive to the leading of Holy Spirit. Not only he mentioned many more times about Spirit in his gospel, some call Acts of Apostles the Act of Holy Spirit. The fourth gospel is according to John. John was the youngest among Jesus’ twelve disciples. Full of affection, he is also the one that Jesus loves. John is also a younger cousin of Jesus. He wrote this gospel at his old age, probably to emphasize Jesus’ 100 percent God and 100 percent man. John may also write to compensate what was not recorded by Matthew and subsequently picked up by Mark and Luke. These three gospels have many similarities and are called “synoptic gospels”. Therefore, while Matthew recorded clearly the “Great Commission” of Jesus that the Lord wants disciples take the gospel to the end of the world, John repeatedly mentioned Jesus’ “Great Commandment”, to love one another. Matthew recorded many parables told by Jesus to depict the characters of Kingdome of Heaven (church). John spent many paragraphs recording Jesus’ teaching about the coming of Holy Spirit, the promise of the Father, that after Jesus died and resurrected and returned to the Father, He would send Holy Spirit to come among us. It’s the coming of Kingdom of Heaven (church). John was the only one following Jesus after He was arrested. When Jesus was nailed on the cross, besides women, John was the only disciple who accompanied Jesus under the cross. He has many insights and first-handed information including the number of big fishes they caught as the resurrected Jesus appeared to them. It was 153. ©2013 Philip Yang
