ON THIS DAY IN BLACK HISTORY: November 13th 354 St. Augustine, one of the most influential thinkers in the development of Western Christianity, was born in Numidia (located in what is now known as Algeria). 1839 The Liberty Party, the first anti-slavery party, was formed in Warsaw, New York. Samuel Ringgold Ward and Henry Highland Garnet were among its earliest supporters. 1839 Two hundred and sixteen free African-Americans, emigrating to Trinidad, landed at the capital, Port-of-Spain. 1899 Albert John Luthuli, anti-apartheid activist and Nobel Prize laureate, was born. 1911 John Jordan Buck ONeil, the first black coach in Major League Baseball, was born. 1913 Dr. Daniel Hale Williams became the first black member of the American College of Surgeons. 1922 The Harlem Renaissance began. 1951 Prima ballerina Janet Collins became the first black artist to perform on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. 1956 Dancer Geoffrey Holder began his contract with the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His performances included Aida and La Perichole. 1956 The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously struck down two Alabama laws requiring racial segregation on public buses. 1967 Carl Stokes became the first black mayor of a major U.S. city, Cleveland, Ohio. .
