ON THIS DAY IN PRO WRESTLING HISTORY (thanks to Graeme Cameron and Brian Hoops) 1902 - George Hackenschmidt beat Tom Cannon in Liverpool, England to win the European Greco-Roman championship. It was this title that Hackenschmidt brought to the U.S. for his famous program with Frank Gotch. 1911 - In the biggest pro wrestling match of the era, and one of the biggest sporting events of the time, Frank Gotch beat George Hackenschmidt at Comiskey Park in Chicago to retain the world title from nearly 29,000 fans. At the time it was one of the largest crowds ever to attend a U.S. sporting event with the exception of a few baseball games, college football games and Horse Racing. 1941 - George Wagner, who later became Gorgeous George, beat Billy McCuin to win the Pacific Coast jr. heavyweight title in Eugene, OR 1951 - Ray Gunkel beat Duke Keomuka to win the Texas title in Dallas 1964 - Dick the Bruiser & Wilbur Snyder beat Angelo Poffo & Niccoli Volkoff to win the WWA tag team titles in Indianapolis 1970 - Buddy Colt beat Nick Bockwinkel in Atlanta to win the Georgia title 1972 - Jerry Brisco beat Rip Hawk in Greenville, SC to win the Eastern States title 1972 - Bulldog Bob Brown & John Quinn beat Steven Little Bear & Dutch Savage in New Westminster, BC to win the Canadian Open tag team titles 1976 - Dusty Rhodes beat Ric Flair in Richmond to win the Mid Atlantic title, but the title change was overturned because Rhodes had his feet on the ropes when he pinned Flair 1978 - David & Kevin Von Erich beat Bruiser Brody & Gino Hernandez in Fort Worth to win the Texas tag team titles 1980 - Giant Baba beat Harley Race in Saga to win the NWA world heavyweight title 1980 - Roddy Piper beat Buddy Rose to win the Pacific Northwest title 1987 - The third annual King of the Ring tournament in Providence, RI saw Randy Savage beat King Kong Bundy in the finals 1989 - Cuchillo beat Super Astro in Monterrey to win the UWA jr. light heavyweight title 1989 - Texas Dirt, who was Dutch Mantell under a mask, beat Black Bart to win the CWA title in Memphis
