ON THIS DAY IN WEATHER HISTORY...August 10, 1996...A typical late-summer super cell thunderstorm moved slowly south across western Dawson County Nebraska during the early evening. Hail reports to the size of golf balls were common around Gothenburg. Significant damage was done to automobiles and homes. The softball sized hail broke windows, punctured roofs and damaged siding. Downburst winds destroyed a small building east of Gothenburg, and blew out the back window of a vehicle on Interstate 80 southeast of town. Between 820 and 830 PM, another severe storm ripped across central and eastern Sherman County packing winds of 80 mph. The high winds tore off a portion of a roof from a cabin near Sherman Reservoir. Significant tree damage was reported in and around the Loup City area. Funnel clouds were sighted near Rockville, and the wind teamed with some hail to damage crops in eastern Sherman County. Severe thunderstorms then moved south into northern Buffalo County, producing large hail and damaging winds. The vinyl siding on a farmhouse was damaged north of Pleasanton, and crop damage was also noted around Pleasanton.
