ONENESS PRINCIPLE Marriage involves a ‘becoming of one - TopicsExpress

ONENESS PRINCIPLE Marriage involves a ‘becoming of one flesh.’ What does this mean? Looking at what marriage is not may help us figure out what it really is. First, it is not a ‘joining’, ‘sticking’ or ‘connecting’ of two people. These two words speak of the gluing, attaching, amalgamation, piecing or linking of two things together. It has an element of fixing or bringing together two people. Second, it is not just a coming together of two spouses. This kind of arrangement speaks of a casual arrangement or agreements of two people living together. However, when a couple enters a marriage covenant, they are pledging to enter a bond where their dreams, aspirations, pain, disappointments, successes, and potential fuse together. It is a commitment that takes them on a road of selfless service to each other, a road of others-centered in all they do. This king of walk with each other calls for sacrificial love where we lay down our lives for our spouses. In such a situation, C.S Lewis says, “Self exist to be abdicated. In self-giving we touch a rhythm, not only of all creation, but of all being…” In God’s Devotional Book for Couples we read, “Many marriages flounder because each spouse continues to look back over their shoulder at a freedom and relationships they had in the past”. Once we put our hand to the plough, we become one with it and learn to synergize the energies for a greater output. That if why two Bible verses become key to defining the power on oneness “Two are better than one because they have a great return for their labour.” While in another verse we read, “Two cannot walk together unless they are agreed.” John Piper concludes for us by saying, ““Husbands and wives, recognize that in marriage you have become one flesh. If you live for your private pleasure at the expense of your spouse, you are living against yourself and destroying your joy. But if you devote yourself with all your heart to the holy joy of your spouse, you will also be living for your joy and making a marriage after the image of Christ and His church.” KITOTO AUTHOR: The Marriage Dance The other side of bliss Biblical Principles of marriage Columnist – Daily Nation – DN2 Monday
