ONION MOUNTAIN FIRE--FINAL DAILY UPDATE As of 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, the Remote Access Weather Station near the Onion Mountain Lookout had received 1.1 inches of rain, and the rain was continuing. Under the influence of steady rain, fire activity was reduced to a few scattered smoldering stumps for the time being. Palm infrared sensors, however, detected residual heat along the western edge, and firefighters will be mopping that up today. Crews on the Onion Mountain Fire worked at digging out and turning over heat-retaining roots and logs so that the cold rain would extinguish the heat. Equipment operators used excavators, masticators, and dozers to accomplish rehabilitation objectives. This will be the final daily update by Oregon Incident Management Team #1. Future updates will be written and distributed via e-mail and Inciweb by the incoming Type 3 Incident Management Team when significant events occur. Oregon Interagency Incident Management Team #1 appreciates the support and encouragement it has received from the community. “The cooperation of the local agencies, including the Forest Service, BLM, Josephine County, ODF, and the Rural/Metro Fire Department, along with the community support we receive in this area, is really outstanding,” said Incident Commander Ross Williams. “The gratitude we’ve seen and heard expressed has been a real boost to the morale of our firefighters and team members. We’re glad we were able to help stop this fire.” The Wild Rivers District of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest will assume management of the Onion Mountain Fire on Friday morning. Brandon Coville will be the Incident Commander of the incoming team. Fire camp will be relocated from the Charles A. Sprague Seed Orchard to the Merlin Airport.
