ONION MTN. UPDATE: Current as of 9/19/2014, 4:41:14 PM Incident Type Wildfire Cause Unknown Date of Origin Saturday September 13th, 2014 approx. 10:30 AM Location 15 Miles West of Grants Pass Incident Commander Ross Williams Incident Description Wildfire Current Situation Total Personnel 962 Size 4,102 Acres Percent of Perimeter Contained 20% Fuels Involved Timber (Litter and Understory) Significant Events Firefighters had another productive day building and securing containment lines around a good portion of the fire perimeter, taking advantage of decreased burning conditions from cool, wet weather. Crews progressed significantly in their effort to contain the western and northern flanks by constructing direct line along the unchecked fire edge. Crews began installing pumps and hose lays to use water to bolster completed handling and dozer line in preparation for the expected warming trend. As a contingency, crews and heavy equipment will continue brushing road systems and chipping woody debris. Outlook Planned Actions Suppression forces plan to take advantage of the favorable weather and continue to establish and strengthen direct and indirect containment lines, and plan for burnout operations on indirect containment lines. Crews will continue to mop up on established direct control lines and mitigate hazard trees. Air resources will be used as needed and as visibility allows. Projected Incident Activity East winds are forecasted, with potential fire growth on the west perimeter over the next 48 hours. Remarks Incident is being managed in cooperation with Oregon Department of Forestry due to proximity to ODF protected land. Acres reported today is from information from IR flight and estimated growth of fire today. ICP is located at the Charles A Sprague Seed Orchard in Merlin, Oregon. Current Weather Weather Concerns Poor overnight humidity recovery along with increasing temperatures will bring increasing fire behavior. Daytime highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s is expected, with afternoon relative humidity bottoming out at 20 to 25%. NE winds, 8 to 10 mph.
