OPSUs Richter to speak at Gilcrease Museum Released by OPSU Campus Communications Goodwell, Okla. — Dr. Sara Richter, OPSU Dean of Liberal Arts and English Professor, will give a presentation on westerns this Friday, May 2, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Okla. The public is invited to attend. The presentation titled, Shoot-Em Ups on the Little Screen: The Rise and Fall of the Television Western, will focus on the TV westerns of the 1950s and 1960s. Richter grew up watching these and has enjoyed researching and re-viewing the series. She has divided TV western series into three categories: westerns that revolve around some sort of gimmick or trick, westerns with a bossy protagonist, and the drifter western where characters wander around the American West without any visible means of financial support. TV westerns fell on hard times in the mid-1970s when viewing audiences became more sophisticated and preferred more intellectual and analytical content with less violence in TV series plots. Richter aims to keep the West alive in her research and throughout her presentation.
