ING Bank Manila distributed more than 500 bikes in six barangays through their Orange Bike Project with the help of World Vision Philippines and the Education Department. Local officers of the international bank thought that the schoolchildren will save time biking to school rather than trekking two kilometers or more everyday. ING Bank is a global financial institution of Dutch origin. Its ING Commercial Bank has been in the Philippines since 1990. Education secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, said in a statement during the launching of International World Indigenous day that no one will be left behind in the department’s Education For All program, specially the Indigenous people. IN Cabangan, Zambales schoolchildren walking an hour or so to go to school, making them exhausted and hungry by the time they reach their classroom. The kids have a difficult time concentrating in class. The beneficiary of the Bank’s Orange Bike project has visibly improved the indigenous children’s class attendance and with a very positive 63% improvement in their academic grades During the turnover of the bikes, ING Manila country manager Zondy Garcia told members of local media that part of their CSR is to promote the Orange Bike project in Asia, they plan to distribute at least 5,000 bikes to impoverished school children studying in remote areas. In Zambales alone they have already distributed 602 bikes. (Bernard Testa)
