ORLANDO Pirates Captain Siyabonga Sangweni escaped death on Sunday. He was involved in a car accident on Columbine Road near Southgate Mall, south of Joburg. While the defender was unharmed, his white BMW 3 Series was written off. Club spokesman Mickey Modisane said the terrible accident happened as Sangweni was moving out of the way of an emergency vehicle. “As a club, we have tried different ways to ensure our players are always safe on the roads. We do a course through Discovery that teaches our players not to text and to keep safe on the roads,” he said. “However, this was a different situation as what happened was beyond his control. We are happy that the mercy of God was with him.” Speaking to source about the accident, Sangweni said: “I am grateful to be alive. The car doesn’t mean anything. I will buy a new one. My life is more important to me.” In November, reported that sources had said a mysterious sangoma warned the squad that their bad luck had just begun. Four Pirates players have survived serious car accidents in the past few months. Lehlohonolo Majoro’s VW Golf was written off near Tshwane in April. A day earlier, former Pirates striker Thulasizwe Mbuyane was involved in a car crash in Ekurhuleni. In October, former midfielder Andile Jali crashed his Jeep in Kokstad, KZN while defender Rooi Mahamutsa escaped with minor injuries when a pole smashed through his windscreen.
