OTUMOETAI INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS COMPETE IN HAVELOCK NORTH MATHSLETICS EVENT It was thinking caps on, fingers on the key-pads and consultation between fellow team members at the recent ‘Mathletics’ Maths Quiz evenings held at Havelock North Intermediate in Hawkes Bay. We sent two teams of Year 7 students and two teams of Year 8 students to the quiz night. Year 7 travelled down on Tuesday 6 August, returning on the Wednesday after being billeted with host families overnight. Similarly, the Year 8 students travelled down on Wednesday and returned on the Thursday. There were four rounds in each Year group competition – beat the clock, individual, team key-pad quiz and a team problem-solving section. Our Year 7 No. 1 team (Jun Kim, Caitlin Knox and Oliver Bowker) were successful over the four rounds, in attaining 7th placing out of around 34 teams – a very commendable effort. Year 7 No. 2 team (Hannah Baxter-Nash, Dannika Worthington and Alex Dunlop) reached 19th place. When it came to the Year 8’s evening, we were blown away with our two teams! No. 1 Team (Melanie Quan, Alfred Shum and Richard Aldridge) reached a fantastic 4th place overall – out of almost 45 teams!! But even better still, our No. 2 team (Danica Hamlin, Woohyun Kim and Euan McNaught) took a silver title for coming 2nd overall!! We also received a number of placings in the associated competition sections of ‘Reducing and Enlarging’ and ‘Statistical Investigation’. Certificates are on their way. We showed that Otumoetai IS a force to be reckoned with in mathematical problem-solving skills and a number of other schools mentioned they’ll have to start putting the hard yards in now before our own WBEET Baymaths evening if they want to gain any placings over us. Awesome effort, Otumoetai!! And also a huge thanks to the parents who transported our teams all that distance for the competition – Mark Knox and Lisa, Brett Worthington, Nicole Aldridge and Debbie Hamlin.
