OUR COACH PICKED THE GROUND A beach volley ball match was suggested Australia against the world on a level playing field We took up our positions standing in the water while the world stood on top of a cliff The net was placed at the edge of the cliff the ball was given to us to serve We laughed and thought, ‘what an advantage’ All we achieved was to hit the cliff wall face not even remotely reaching the net up high above, beyond our reach Well, we lost the serve Then point after point went up on the scoreboard while our score remained zero The game progressed as the circles on the opposition’s score increased (We had agreed before play we wouldn’t swap sides) Well, things became desperate Our side of the net was flooded by sea water We called out to our coach, but he couldn’t hear us He was asleep on a sand dune miles away The game continued on without an end in sight as it rained down balls and we drowned in the surf another old piece I wrote in the late nineties
