OUR LATEST NEWSLETTER: Greetings Folks! This week we are gearing up to another F.A.W.C night including a special screening of inspiring food documentary SPINNING PLATES, three appetizers as versatile as the three restaurants featured in the film - something experimental, something hearty, something exotic – and a glass of bubbly. A handful of tickets are still available, so if you don’t have plans for this Saturday night yet, why not indulge a bit! Apologies to those of you who have tried in vain to get into one of our packed-out screenings of IN SEARCH OF CHOPIN – this week’s sessions have just been published on our website, so if you have missed the film, be sure to book in advance! We have two brand new films for you this week that both tackle the topic of marital love – yet from completely different angles: THE FACE OF LOVE is a film for the romantics among you. Annette Bening stars as Nikki, a recent widow still very much mourning the death of her beloved husband, Garrett (Ed Harris), five years prior. When Nikki meets a stranger who looks almost exactly like her dead husband, she can’t help but fall in love again and starts a relationship with Tom (also played by Ed Harris) – without revealing the nature of her attraction to him. The film explores the unsettling and emotional pitfalls of love in a tender and moving way without being cheesy – one for the heart! No love is lost between the two leads in French comedy THE VOLCANO – Alain (Dany Boon) and Valérie (Valérie Bonneton) are divorced, hate each others’ guts and would quite happily go through life without ever seeing each other again. Unfortunately, an Icelandic volcano with an unpronounceable name foils their plans to get to their daughter’s wedding by erupting in a spectacular manner, hence forcing the two squabblers to team up on their trip. Hilarity ensues in a way only a former couple with hatred in their hearts, venom in their veins and a highly competitive streak can produce. Good old vitriolic fun! What else is on? Charming rom-com drama WORDS & PICTURES with Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche as two teachers waging a heated war/courtship over the question which is more powerful – the word or the picture?; stunningly beautiful Polish drama IDA about a young woman who, having grown up in a convent and just about to take her vows, learns about a devastating secret in her past which sends her on a journey of self-discovery; star-studded food comedy CHEF featuring not only plenty of delicious-looking food but also Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jnr., Dustin Hoffman, Sofia Vergara and Jon Favreau who stars as a disillusioned chef turning his back on the restaurant scene in order to run a taco truck; much lauded documentary IN SEARCH OF CHOPIN which celebrates the life and work of the great Polish composer; and Michael Winterbottom’s comedy THE TRIP TO ITALY in which Steve Coogan and comedian pal Rob Brydon chomp and wisecrack their way around the best restaurants of Italy. Our next Wednesday Night Special is Swiss Cold War thriller MANIPULATION which centers around a journalist who commits suicide after being accused of being a Soviet spy, the agent investigating the case (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and a shady PR consultant (Sebastian Koch, THE LIVES OF OTHERS) who seems to know more than he lets on. For a good dose of suspense, come along to this one! Tickets are only $10. See you all at the movies! Louisa, Fran and Michelle
