OUR MEXICAN-AMERICAN SOPRANO Ailyn Perez WOWS THEM IN NYC! N.Y. TIMES: For a Tenor’s Centennial, Celebrating His Legacy With a Cast of Opera Stars - Richard Tucker Gala at Avery Fisher Hall - by Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim A dream team of opera singers assembled at Avery Fisher Hall for the Richard Tucker Gala on Sunday, an evening that included Stephanie Blythe, Joyce DiDonato, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham and Eric Owens. But before any of them sang a note, it was the voice of Tucker that filled the hall in a recording of “Thine Alone,” in which cantorial ardor and classical training blended into that combination of polish and popular appeal that made him one of the best-loved tenors of his time. The soprano Ailyn Pérez gave a tastefully restrained rendition of Charpentier’s “Depuis le jour,” from “Louise,” in which subtle changes in intensity created a watercolor-like effect. In a deliciously comic scene with her husband and fellow Tucker Prize recipient, Stephen Costello, she showed her sassy side, as Norina played hard to get in “Esulti pur la Barbara,” from “L’Elisir d’Amore.” Each revealed a perfect grasp of comic timing in acting and singing. Mr. Costello’s bright, ringing top notes came through in Gounod’s “Salut! Demeure chaste et pure,” from “Faust.” The tenor Matthew Polenzani gave a theatrical performance of Offenbach’s “Kleinzach,” from “Les Contes d’Hoffmann,” in which his transformation from brash and confident entertainer to anxious and impassioned lover was vocally convincing and elegant. All the singers were greatly helped by the orchestra, made up of members of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Frizza, which proved itself fluent in the wide range of idioms.
