Oberlins Punch Brothers Honored Oberlin Colleges Conservatory of Music has named the Chris Thile-led bluegrass quintet the Punch Brothers Affiliate Scholars, in recognition of significant professional achievement. The group, which features 2004 Oberlin graduate Chris Eldridge on guitar as well as mandolinist and vocalist Thile, are in their second year of residency at the prestigious conservatory. Dean Andrea Kalyn presented the band members, which also includes Gabe Witcher on fiddle/violin, Noam Pikelny on banjo and Paul Kowert on upright bass, with Affiliate Scholar certificates and ID cards on Wednesday, just prior to an impromptu jam with Oberlin students. The band has spent the last two years coaching students, conducting masters classes, giving lectures and performing.
