Objectives of Five-Year Plans in India • First Plan (1951-1956)--- development of the agricultural sector • Second Plan (1956-1961)--- development of the public sector • Third Plan (1961–1966)--- stressed agriculture and allotment for power sector • Fourth Plan (1969–1974)--- encouraging education and creating employment opportunities • Fifth Plan (1974–1979)--- employment, poverty alleviation (Garibi Hatao), and justice. • Rolling Plan (1978–1980)--- Janata Party government rejected the Fifth Five-Year Plan • Sixth Plan (1980–1985)--- marked the beginning of economic liberalisation • Seventh Plan (1985–1990)-- stress on improving the productivity level of industries by upgrading of technology. • Annual Plans (1990-1992)--- Eighth Plan could not take off in 1990 due to the fast changing political situation. The country faced severe balance of payment crisis. • Eighth Plan (1992–1997)--- aimed towards modernization of industries, poverty reduction, encouraging employment, strengthening the infrastructure. beginning of privatisation and liberalisation in India. • Ninth Plan (1997-2002)--- increasing agricultural and rural income and to improve the conditions of the marginal farmer and landless laborers. • Tenth Plan (2002–2007)--- targeted towards making India’s economy as the fastest growing economy on the global level, with an aim to raise the growth rate to 10% and to reduce the poverty rate and increase the literacy rate in the country. • Eleventh Plan (2007-2012)--- to increase GDP growth to 10%, to reduce educated unemployment to below 5% while it aims to reduce infant mortality rate to 28 and maternal mortality ratio to 1 per 1000 live births, reduce Total Fertility Rate to 2.1 in the health sector. • Twelfth Plan (2012–2017)--- Government of India has decided for the growth rate at 8.2% but the National Development Council (NDC) on 27 Dec 2012 approved 8% growth rate for 12th five-year plan ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Source: twitter/sansarlochan
