Observation and my opinion. We will measure the strength of Rio’s Elected Officials and political candidates in the upcoming Mayoral, County and School Board President elections not by their accomplishments because this is what they are elected to do and we recognize them for it, but we will measure their leadership by their ability to part ways with the old ways of doing things. We hold Rio’s elected officials to the highest ethical and moral standards and expect for them to distance themselves from the egregious practice of employing armies of politiqueras and vote harvesters to win elections. The employment of politiqueras and vote harvesters is not an acceptable practice to win elections and elected officials must work diligently to abandon this practice. We challenge Rio’s city officials to pass an ordinance and ban the practice of employing politiqueras during elections. It is the right thing to do. This is a real test of their leaderhip. Anybody can build a park, build a school with state money, pave a street and claim victory for it. Our culture must work hard to rid itself of this black eye. We must change the mind to change the culture. We encourage our elected officials to donate those thousands of dollars to be paid to politiqueras to be donated to the American Red Cross or a local charity. It is now illegal and against the law to provide any form of payment to a politiquera to harvest votes. House Bill 148 which was signed by the Governor prohibits this behavior. As citizens we must assist the DA in enforcing these new laws by reporting illegal activity during elections. It is not acceptable to look away. It is the responsibility of our elected officials to set a good example to our children and young graduates who may take an interest in running for office for the generations to come.
