October 10. On this date in 1964 - fifty years ago today - Leader of the Pack by The Shangri-Las was released. This quintessential teen tragedy record would become a #1 hit for Jerry Leiber and Mike Stollers Red Bird label. It was also a hit in England, three times: #11 in 1965, #3 in 1972, and #7 in 1976. It 1990 it hit #1 in Australia. Leader of the Pack has to be one of the most parodied records of all time: Leader of the Laundromat by The Detergents, Leader of Iraq by Bob Rivers, A Leader Like Barack by The Capitol Steps, Our Leader is Lurpak in an ad for Lurpak brand butter, and Leader of the Flock in a childrens TV show called Shaun the Sheep. Cover versions include those by Bette Midler, Twisted Sister, The Carpenters, and Alvin and the Chipmunks. It was recorded in French as Le Chef de la Bande, and theres even an Estonian version called Jõugu Liider. Look out! Look out! Look out! Look out! youtube/watch?v=Q8UKf65NOzM
