October 29: Luke 14–16 Christ was a master at using every situation to teach important truths. Todays reading emphasizes that fact. Luke 14:1-24 – Supping With Christ. This passage records the experiences of Christ when He had supper with a Pharisee on a Sabbath day. •Problems: a health problem (Christ healed a man of dropsy at the supper); a hypocritical problem (the hypocritical criticism about healing on the Sabbath). •Pride: Christ gave a parable that rebuked those who eagerly sought the honored seats at feasts. •Priority: Christ gave a parable of the great supper and how folk refused the invitation to it because of their poor priorities. Luke 14:25-35 – Serving of Christ. Christ challenged the multitude about following and serving Him. •Condition of serving: must put Christ ahead of family. •Cost of serving: involves a cross. •Commitment in serving: two parables show we must be prepared to go all the way with Christ. •Character of service: good service is like good salt but bad service is like salt without its savor which is of little value. Luke 15 – Saving by Christ. When sinners came to hear Him, Christ gave three great parables about salvation. •Lost sheep: the peril of the sheep (it got lost in the dangerous wilderness); the pursuit of the sheep (by the shepherd to rescue the sheep); the pleasure over the sheep (when it was rescued). •Lost silver: the falling of the coin (found it by sweeping, hence it fell on the floor); the finding of the coin (after diligent effort); the felicity over the coin (rejoicing after it was found). •Lost son: the demand of the son (for his inheritance); the degradation of the son (spent all on sinful living); the destitution of the son (ended up in a pig pen); the deliverance of the son (when he came back to his father); the delight over the son (after his return); the disgruntlement over the son (the elder brothers poor attitude). Luke 16 – Schooling by Christ. Some more teaching by Christ. •Cleverness: the parable of the unjust steward rebukes Christians for lack of wisdom in their dealings. •Covetousness: shows peril of covetousness to Pharisees who were covetous. •Couples: condemnation of remarriage after divorce. •Conflagration: description of abodes after death especially of the horrifying fiery experience of the lost. —Butlers Daily Bible Reading (1) Synopsis
