October 30th, 2014 Fr. Tonys new message: Dear Brothers and Sisters, I invite you to celebrate with joyful gratitude to God this morning’s announcement that Brittany Maynard is not set on leaving us on November 1st. We thank God for her life and for her feeling that she still has enough joy left in her to continue her battle here on earth, hopefully until the day that she hears the voice of God calling her home! For me, this is also a summons not to lower our guard on our continued and fervent prayer for her and for her family at this time. It is obvious that the incredible response of love and affection that has been sent her from all over the world, has softened her heart and breached her reason. Please continue to send her your messages. Some of you speak of people who are no longer with us; many others speak for people who can no longer speak for themselves, and all of us are saying louder than ever that “love is stronger than death!” Brittany remains under enormous pressure at this time “to do the right thing,” which for her is not to be a burden on anyone, least of all on her family who love her and who have stood by her all this time. Please continue to remind her that her family is most happy to take care of her and that their suffering would be infinitely greater and most irreparable if she left them on her own terms, than for them to care for her in this moment of her greatest need. Remind Brittany that she is not alone in her suffering and that, as soldiers in the thicket of the battle, we will not leave her alone but will continue to fight with her, disturbing God day and night to give her the Spirit of His Son, so that her final effort may be to abandon herself to the loving embrace of the Father and say, “Into your hands I commend my spirit!” And now, Brittany, remember that your heart belongs to God. We are rooting for you to ensure that no one robs you of your God-given right to hope, to freedom, and to heaven. So, even if your body gets weaker by the day, stay the course! Even if your eyes get blurry as you go on, keep your mind focused on heaven. Even if your speech gets slurred and you need help to do things that you once were capable of doing, think of our love as your hands, as your feet, as your mouth! I have no doubt that your mother knows this language: all mothers do! Take your time, and learn with St. Paul to “glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Finally, be patient! You’ve come a long way and you’ve done much for others before: now it’s your turn to receive and let them do something for you. You are the gift that will make them happy: for as long as you are here, there will be light in their eyes! So, don’t rush into anything or make a move until your beloved whispers to you from “behind the wall;” and only then, as you hear him say, “Arise, my beloved, come away my beautiful one!,“ then throw yourself in His arms and let Him carry you home. With love from Boston – and from all over the world, Fr. Tony
