October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! https://youtube/watch?v=WsSIIrcVijI Please watch the Hearing on Dyslexia that took place on Sept. 18, 2014. Things are happening in the Dyslexia community. We need dyslexia awareness and training of our nations teachers. Dyslexia is 1 in 5. Why are we as a nation NOT IMPLEMENTING READING RESEARCH THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS. As Dr. Sally Shaywaitz would say, There is NOT a Knowledge gap, but an ACTION GAP Our students already are behind in 1st grade and the gap continues to widen as time goes on. Why are we waiting for our students to fail? We have the Reading Programs that can remediate dyslexia. We need to screen our kids with a 20 question tool in VPK and K and then remediate with evidence based Programs such as Linda Mood Bell, Barton and Wilson, which are all Orton Gillingham based. Thank you Duval County Public Schools for paving the way for the rest of the state. We need to replicate your GRASP Choice Academy throughout the state and nation. 15 students, gen ed , special ed, interventionist, assistive technology, 1:1 contracted out O.G. reading for an hour a day. If you remediate early, many students will not need Special Education Services later in life and will not end up in our prisons. The Florida Standards Assessment (new FCAT) has even more complex reading and writing requirements, yet the testing doesnt allow for some accommodations that are used in the classroom on a daily basis such as Text to Speech- used for writing with word prediciton, and Speech to Text- programs like Dragon Speaking Naturally. We can do better for our NATIONS 1 in 5 CHILDREN! The Reading research is good for all students, if most SLD/dyslexics are educated in gen. ed classes with drive by (15 min or less per day) support facilitation by ESE teachers, how are we ever going to meet Federal IDEA law that requires evidence based methodologies? The READING SCIENCE RESEARCH states intervention should be provided daily for at least 45 min per day in a small group of 1:3 and if the group is larger more time is needed daily to CLOSE THE GAP! If your school system wrote their own their own READING curriculum without peer reviewed research, then they are not following the Federal IDEA law which states, The child’s IEP must include “a statement of the special education and related services and supplementary aids and services, based on peer-reviewed research to the extent practicable to be provided to the child.” (Section 1414(d)(1)(A)(i)(IV)) In determining whether a child has a specific learning disability, IDEA 2004 describes a process by which the IEP team “may use a process that determines if the child responds to scientific, research based intervention as a part of the evaluation process.” (Section §1414(b)(6)(B)) This language in IDEA 2004 creates new requirements for schools to use scientific research based instructional practices and interventions that are based on accepted, peer-reviewed research, if such research exists. School officials often refuse to write educational methodologies into the IEP. They argue that teachers should be free to use an “eclectic approach” to educating children with disabilities, and should not be forced to use any specific methodology. Congress rejected this practice when they reauthorized IDEA 2004. - See more at: wrightslaw/idea/art/10.tips.steedman.htm#3wrightslaw/idea/art/10.tips.steedman.htm#3 Tricia Gerard, M.Ed, NBCT Like our page Dyslexia, Learning and Support Group Florida if you would like to be notified of meeting times and locations
