Ode to a Sidewalk Glacier - March 2014 How I shuddered as I saw you slowly grow - As the ice storms, snow squalls and long cold nights feed your girth. You stood proud and crystal white as you claimed your pedestrian throne. I watched helpless - but for the knowledge that time would eventually be on my side. Day by day, as your nemesis, the mighty sun, Gained in strength and duration, I cheered your slow imperceptible wilting, waiting, Until the day when I would hear you trickling down the sewers. And now, as you lie dying in pool of your wet blood, Like a dirty wounded bull at the feet of a matador, Do I cheer? Do I gloat? Do I proclaim victory over your persistent being? No. Farewell, my worthy adversary. Enjoy your final 3 days, As you take your fleeting refuge in the final subzero nights. And I will see you again next year.
