Odette came in last night because her owners had noticed something firm poking out of the skin on her neck and she seemed quiet and dull. On examination I found a piece of stick poking from her skin at the top of her neck. When I palpated the back of her throat with my finger I could feel the stick bridging from top to bottom across her pharynx. We put her on a drip to rehydrate her and when we anaesthetised her today we removed this massive thorn. It had penetrated in under her neck, gone through all the tissue, come out at the base of her tongue in the back of her throat, crossed the back of her throat and gone up through the soft palate (ie the roof of the mouth). You can see in the photos how long it is and how far it had penetrated remembering that the base was snapped off at skin level. Odette has recovered well from her anaesthetic and should be fine with some pain relief and antibiotics. We are keeping her on a drip for at least a day because it might be a bit hard for her to swallow. We have advised Odette that in the future she should seek professional help if she wants to do some body piercing!
