Of all the hikes I have done, my special place and the one I know - TopicsExpress

Of all the hikes I have done, my special place and the one I know most intimately is the South Cumberland State Park. It is a little known park consisting of ten separate areas spread out over four counties in Southern Middle Tennessee. There are over ninety miles of trails open to the public and these trails range from easy to scream for your mommy difficult. It is a beautiful place though and I would encourage all my friends in the area to visit. You will not be disappointed. Rushing rapids, waterfalls large and small everywhere, amazing overlooks from clifftops and a forest that changes drastically in its flora from top to bottom as one descends into the gorges. Christmas time is here and I like to establish my own traditions such as A Pitiful Christmas which I have had the past four years but with the deaths of Little Ceasar the dog and Cinderella the Cat, well, its just not the same without the Parade of Pitiful Animals. Last Christmas Eve I hiked a small portion of the Fiery Gizzard Trail (Backpacker Magazine consistently ranks the Fiery Gizzard among the top 25 trails in the United States for its beauty and diversity). It was kind of sad since Cinderella had just died and, of course, the memory of Little Ceasar (best dog ever!) a year earlier. Yet, it was special and I hope to be able to do a similar hike this year on Christmas Eve. But, again, for my friends in the Clarksville, Nashville, and Murfreesboro areas; I wish you would discover South Cumberland and all it has to offer.Do it while you are still relatively young. It is filled with magical places.
