Officer-involved shootings have been news in the United States in recent weeks following the August shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown caused by then-Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson. Police shootings of an unarmed man in a Brooklyn apartment stairwell and of a 12-year-old holding an airsoft gun at a Cleveland playground also have gained national attention. Midland spokeswoman Sara Bustilloz.said she doesn’t think the department will face backlash over Monday’s shooting, noting that MPD has consistently followed its policy for years. “These are things that we’re trained to do, but what the outcome is often depends on what the situation consists of,” she said.
