Official Press Release Official Press Release: Cleo Nasser creates new song by sampling Madonna acapellas from the past 20 years Cleo Nasser used samples from several songs to create a never heard before Madonna song! Music lovers around the world can now enjoy the newly created track with the actual voice of the Queen of Pop... Madonna. Available on Legitmix and called Love Me, Leave Me. Cleo Nasser, a Madge superfan who’s been remixing Madonna since the mid 90’s, wanted to try something new: create a song by stitching together Madonna acapellas from the last two decades, digitally remaking the tone, pitch and timing of the words to give a whole new meaning. I want Madonna fans to identify where each snippet came from, states Cleo, that they remember the original songs. After all, this is a great tribute to her. The central theme is loving relationships, something present in practically all of her discography. The Nasser-reconstructed Madonna lyrics were then remixed by a group of producers dedicated to remixing the Queen of Pop, part of a collective known as the Madonna Remixers United Alliance and released on RemixRecon Records via Legitmix. Known for her work remixing Madonna’s songs for years, Cleo Nasser devoted almost six times more time to create Love Me, Leave Me, than what usually takes to make a conventional single remix. The work began in February, with the idea of joining different parts of songs to form a new one. The biggest challenge was to maintain musical harmony and at the same time create lyrics that made sense and were interesting, Cleo says. Imagine a jigsaw puzzle with pieces that were not originally part of the same set. Each word and phrase had to be re-shaped for the fitting to be perfect, she continues. The lyrics were created based on the available clean studio acapellas. I started putting some parts together, checking what made sense and would have the compatible chords, from this verses, the bridge and chorus were created, said Cleo. In this process, there wasn’t an specific goal in the beginning I was trying to see what could be done and the lyrics were built according to what would work in terms of music, Cleo continues, adding that the choice for the creation of a ballad, a slow song, demanded a more complex elaboration of the usually necessary in creating something for the dance floor. In addition, there was the matter of composing verses in English, which I know well, but is not my native language, she adds. Love Me, Leave Me (Maxi-Single) Love Me, Leave Me is about relationships and the difficulties faced by anyone involved in one. Besides the original version, the song also features six remixes, plus the instrumental version and the one edited for video, all completely new. Once the acapella was ready, and the concept of the music was set, I started to think about other options and some well-known musicians and DJs wanted to help to compose what would become the single, explains Cleo, who is herself responsible for preparing a dance version, thought for nightclubs around the world, another remix inspired by the disco music of the 70s, and also a version focused on the use of string instruments. Cleopatras Ale Club JUMP MIX is a reference to the work I have done previously, with powerful beats to the slopes. Cleos Strings MIX Rapping is something to listen to at any time, more cheerful than the original, and features the rapper New5ense, which was very interesting. My latest inspiration for this work was Cleos Ice Skater 70s MIX, which brings a blend of various retro, seventies elements, but nothing too specific, explains Cleo. Channing Lukesavant contributed two remixes, Lukesavant Saturday Night Rework, an edgier dance rock style, with emphasis on guitars and heavier instrumental, and Lukesavant Friday Night Rework with a more disco/funk sound. Dens54 completes the package with a haunting combo slow dubstep & dance version, Dens54 vs Cleo Remix, focusing on simplicity and softer melodies. * vocal music without instrumental accompaniment Video clip In addition to the eight versions of the song, an original music video was created for Love Me, Leave Me to further support the release, the concept and overall message of the original new song. Designed by the audiovisual professional Julio Skov, the video blends images used in Madonna’s video interlude, Justify My Love from 2012’s top tour The MDNA, Winter nature scenes and Sonia Lafuente, the ice skater and star of the video, practicing stunts and dance steps on ice. It took us some time to develop the concept, because I wanted to use something that represented what was sung, but avoiding the obvious cliché of having a couple during the twists and turns in a relationship. This dancer/skater is a metaphor for the difficulties of maintaining a relationship. You need to keep moving and especially to have the presence of mind to get up after a fall, says Julio. The scenes of the skater, Sonia Lafuente, are from the video Keep Dancing, part of a campaign to promote dance in Spain. The winter images come from the video How To Be, produced by Anton Lanski. Similar to what was done in the song production, the editing has a major relevance in the creation process of the clip. It allowed the creation of a completely new story based on the same images. In the original video, the story ends when the ice breaks up and the skater sinks. But this could not be the end of our script, so I reversed the scenes and everything takes on a new dynamic, with more speed, after that, dissects Julio. Graphic art For the cover art and visual identity of all the parts that make up the single Love Me, Leave Me, including its respective booklet, Madonna’s June 2014 LUomo Vogue magazine (focused on menswear) photo shoot was the center piece of the graphic art. Moreover, the designer Emerson Duarte developed the concept based on the letter and the contrast suggested by the title and lyrics of the song. When I started working the video was almost finished and brought a visual concept very well developed. I then decided to follow that , said Emerson. I included some elements present in the video, such as the flowers, and decided to draw a new font to write Madonna. These letters represent reconstruction, alluding to the songs lyrics and its creative process. The goal was to create something clean, sophisticated and yet simple. I used on the cover basically the colors black, white, gray and gold. These shades were then chosen as the basis for all other graphic pieces of the single, continued Emerson. About Cleo Nasser Cleo Nasser started remixing songs for Madonna homely way in 1995. Autodidact, Cleo developed her mixing techniques from practical experience with software editing and audio creation, and also from knowledge from professionals DJs. After a few years hiatus, in 2004 she released a remix for Frozen and another for Ray of Light, which were the beginning of a more professional job. In 2007, Cleo created for the first time a completely new Madonna song. An acappella was created based on a message recorded by the singer to promote the album Bedtime Stories. As a result, the song Often Never was made. The work was so original and fun that Cleo was taken by the excitement and, in the end, five versions were made. Over several years, Cleo has been remixing Madonna and delighting her fans. In 2009, she served as a DJ, playing live at parties in various locations. Currently, she keeps doing her creations as Madonna launches new albums. About Lukesavant Channing “Lukesavant” began remixing on whim (or by mistake) in December 1999.
