Often tucked away in remote areas of NSW are teams of firefighters from the NSW RFS, National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Forest Corporation. These firefighters do some of the most arduous and dirty work of all firefighters, they are known as Remote Area Firefighting Teams or RAFT for short. They are often supported by highly skilled and trained helicopter pilots, working together to control and extinguish fires in remote areas. Here one team works with a helicopter to douse a burning log that if not extinguished could, given the right weather conditions, allow burning embers to jump or blow across a control line further spreading the fire.
