Often we express frustration in this space when a child dies - TopicsExpress

Often we express frustration in this space when a child dies accidentally at the hands of a gun and parents or guardians are not charged with reckless endangerment. So it’s heartening to see that authorities in Calhoun County, in the Florida panhandle, seem to take this as seriously as we do. But this case has an interesting twist. Richard Broxton, 27, was arrested this week for child abuse after shooting himself in the head in front of his daughter in May, causing her mental anguish. Police said Broxton and the girl’s mother had been arguing when he placed a .22-caliber pistol on the dining room table and said he would kill himself. Shortly after a gunshot rang out, Broxton stood up and treated his head wound. Fearful that her father would harm himself or someone else, the child took the gun to her room and hid it. The state attorney’s office would not comment on the case to the Times, but the charges seem to acknowledge a basic truth: guns do not belong anywhere near children, and their very presence introduces trauma, even if they aren’t actually shot. Here is today’s report. click-to-read-mo.re/p/2P70
