Oh Jefferson/Sidney Kimmel Medical School...you truly disappointed - TopicsExpress

Oh Jefferson/Sidney Kimmel Medical School...you truly disappointed me yesterday. From a school-wide broadcast message: For all of these reasons [being quarantined with Ebola patients, health risks do not appear to be diminishing, etc.], we are strongly discouraging travel to Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. Oh, health risks arent diminishing? I thought if we tried to quarantine a whole section of a continent and stopped sending people to help it would get better! So basically were saying sorry your entire country is falling apart because of this disease, but because its not us, were not going to help. In fact were going to make it harder for members of our community to come help you. But good luck! How inspiring and historic would it be if instead our school set up a program directly funneling medical professionals, supplies, and money to this crisis? How compassionate and truly concerned for our fellow human beings would we be then? If health is all we do, then health is what we should do. Not just for Americans. Not just for Philadelphians, For human beings. We dont hesitate to call members of the military heroes for going to battle with bulletproof vests, superior weaponry, and full salaries plus combat and hazardous duty pay. Yet healthcare professionals, who face the enemy with a thin set of gloves and paper gowns and often less pay than they otherwise would get, are met with Chris Christie and Andrew Cuomo telling them that in their well-informed medical opinion, they should be quarantined for 3 weeks. I think we have things backwards in this country.
