Ohhhh….I like this article. Interesting idea about having a “Marriage Meeting” but I want to focus on the author’s points about APPRECIATION about halfway through the article. TWO very good points the author makes. First, use “I statements” for appreciating your partner. Instead of saying, “You did a great job with…” saying, “I appreciate you for…” or “I like that you…” I always hope that people will use “I statements” when arguing or confronting an issue but I had never thought about the impact “I statements” could have on positive, appreciative communication. Try it. The second point is to never forget that “behavior that gets rewarded gets repeated.” If you reward your partner with appreciation, affection, connection, gifts, words of affirmation, or attention for the behaviors that you appreciate…it’s going to get repeated. If you ignore your partner when he/she does something you appreciate…that behavior will NOT be repeated. Keep that in mind for ALL the people in your life…especially your kids. Next week, back to normal schedule and we’ll spend some time talking about the different “Love Languages” that get bandied about all the time.
